Iranian naval forces said they forced a US submarine to surface.

The USS Florida was intercepted by an Iranian Fateh-class diesel-electric submarine in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Rear Admiral Shahram Irani. The US denies the claim, but the US navy did say the USS Florida was en route to the Middle East to patrol with the Fifth Fleet. The alleged encounter comes less than three weeks after the Iranian navy reportedly turned back a US spy plane on the edge of its airspace. Both encounters took place amid heightened tensions in the region.
