The American Embassy in Sudan has issued a security alert advising its 16,000 citizens to shelter in place due to the ongoing fighting between government forces and militants in Khartoum. The airport in Khartoum is closed and the embassy has distanced itself from any efforts to evacuate private US citizens. The US military has deployed additional troops to a base in Djibouti to prepare for a possible evacuation of American personnel in Sudan. The Sudanese Armed Forces have agreed to evacuate diplomatic personnel by air with military aircraft provided by Khartoum. Saudi Arabia has already evacuated more than 150 people from Sudan by sea, including 60 from other countries.
