E. Jean Carroll testified to a New York court that former President Donald Trump charmed and flirted with her before leading her into a luxury department store dressing room and raping her in the 1990s. Trump has denied the allegations, calling them a "made-up scam". Carroll ran into Trump in a luxury department store in Manhattan in the 1990s and asked him for help choosing lingerie for a different woman. Trump then suggested she model some of the lingerie and the two walked toward the dressing rooms. Carroll allegedly was shoved up against the wall and pulled down her tights, leading to Trump raping her.
Carroll did not file a police report and first aired her accusations in a 2019 column for New York magazine. Donald Trump has been sued for defamation and battery for lying to harm him politically. Carroll sued him for defamation and battery, and is seeking an undisclosed amount in damages. Trump described Carroll as "a woman who I had nothing to do with, didn't know, and would have no interest in knowing her if I ever had the chance." Reid Hoffman is financing the case, claiming that he is protecting the rule of law from the threat posed by Trump's legal methods. Judge Lewis Kaplan banned all discussion of the case's funding in the courtroom on Wednesday.
Trump is not required to appear before Kaplan in person, and has given no indication that he plans to testify. Kaplan warned Trump that he could open himself up to further charges if he continues to comment on the case on social media.
