Deana Welker, an American teacher in Khartoum, was evacuated by the US State Department last Saturday after a week of conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. The US State Department has advised that American citizens in Sudan should make their own arrangements to stay safe in these difficult circumstances. Welker made it back home to North Carolina on Wednesday, but is worried about the internet going out. She woke up on April 15 to gunfire and explosions outside as fighting between the rival groups erupted. Welker and her fellow teachers lived on a main road that leads to the airport, where gunfire and artillery went off.

On April 16, several RSF fighters entered their building and held the guards at gunpoint. They decided to flee and stayed in a nearby hotel, but were running low on supplies. They found a bigger hotel down the road and waited for an evacuation, which never came. Welker was deflated by the lack of evacuation.
