IBM plans to pause hiring for jobs that can be automated in the near future, CEO Arvind Krishna has told Bloomberg. The company plans to slow or suspend hiring for back-office functions such as human resources, which could affect 7,800 workers. IBM is being selective when filling jobs that don't directly touch clients or technology, and is still actively hiring for thousands of positions. Goldman Sachs warned that generative AI could cause a "significant disruption" in the labor market, with 300 million workers worldwide being replaced with AI and two-thirds of jobs in the US and Europe exposed to AI automation. A group of 1,100 AI researchers, tech luminaries and futurists signed an open letter demanding a six-month moratorium on "giant AI experiments".
