Ukraine conflict: Zelensky travels to The Hague as new explosions rock Kiev

May 4, 2023

(BBC)

Explosions have been heard in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, a day after Russia accused Ukraine of carrying out a drone attack on the Kremlin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to speak at The Hague and visit the International Criminal Court. He is expected to meet Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to discuss his demands for more military support. Russia has threatened to retaliate if necessary. The Kremlin was attacked by two drones in the early hours of Thursday morning, killing several people and setting part of an oil refinery on fire.

Some commentators argue that Russia staged the attack to bring the war home to a Russian domestic audience and set conditions for a wider mobilisation. Others disagree, saying Russia would have little interest in making itself look "weak" by staging an attack that makes the Kremlin look vulnerable.
