The Arab League will hold its annual summit in Saudi Arabia on 19 May, preceded by preparatory meetings of senior officials and ministers. The gathering of leaders from the 22-member Arab League comes at a time of heightened tensions with Iran and wars in Syria and Yemen. Saudi Arabia has taken a more assertive role in foreign policy under its powerful, young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The selection of Saudi Arabia as host and the summit's dates came after consultations between Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abul-Gheit and Saudi officials.Separate Arab summits will also be held in Mauritania in 2023 and Saudi Arabia, focusing on development and Arab-African relations. Arab leaders held their last summit in Algeria in November, marking the end of a three-year hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.
