Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were fatally shot in northern India by gunmen posing as journalists on Saturday night. Ahmed was serving a life sentence for kidnapping and was being escorted to a hospital for a medical check-up when he was shot at point-blank range. Three suspects were detained at the scene. Ahmed was born in Prayagraj in 1962 and had more than 100 criminal cases launched against him over the past two decades. He was elected to serve in the Uttar Pradesh state assembly for five consecutive terms and was a member of Lok Sabha between 2004 and 2009.
