Newly catastrophic earthquake in Turkey

February 27, 2023

(RT) ⸻ The Turkish emergencies agency AFAD reported a new earthquake in the east, with at least one fatality recorded. According to preliminary reports, one person has been killed and 69 others injured in the eastern province of Malatya. The quake was estimated to have originated at a depth of approximately seven kilometers and could be felt in neighboring provinces. Initial reports indicate that over 20 buildings have been flattened in this latest disaster to hit Türkiye, with 20 people taken to hospital in the aftermath. The quake is located in an area where several fault lines pass, making the country vulnerable to seismic events. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Monday that the government will do whatever it takes to prepare all cities for disasters, and will not permit the construction of high-rise buildings in areas damaged by the quakes and will ban all construction near fault lines.
